Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

What Is a Reconsideration Request?

A reconsideration request is a formal appeal asking the Social Security Administration (SSA) to review your denied claim again. This review is done by a new claims examiner who was not involved in the original decision. It's your opportunity to submit updated information, correct errors, and strengthen your case.

When to File

You must file your reconsideration request within 60 days of the date on your denial letter. If you miss the deadline, you may have to start your SSDI application all over again, which can delay your benefits significantly.

Steps to File a Reconsideration Request in Missouri

1. Review Your Denial Letter

The denial letter from the SSA explains why your claim was denied. Understanding the specific reasons—such as insufficient medical evidence or not meeting work credit requirements—will help you respond effectively.

2. Gather New or Missing Evidence

Now is the time to provide:

  • Updated medical records
  • New test results
  • Statements from doctors about how your condition limits you
  • Any new diagnoses or changes in your condition

3. Complete the Reconsideration Forms

You’ll need to fill out these SSA forms:

  • SSA-561: Request for Reconsideration
  • SSA-3441: Disability Report – Appeal
  • SSA-827: Authorization to Disclose Information to SSA

These forms can be submitted:

  • Online at SSA.gov
  • By mail to your local Social Security office
  • In person (schedule an appointment)

4. Double-Check Everything

Make sure:

  • All forms are complete and accurate
  • Evidence is clearly labeled and attached
  • Deadlines are met

Incomplete or rushed submissions can lead to another denial.

What Happens After You File

It usually takes 3 to 6 months for SSA to make a decision after you file a reconsideration request. During this time:

  • A different SSA examiner will re-review your case
  • They may contact your doctors or request a Consultative Exam
  • You’ll receive a new decision by mail

If you're denied again, you can request a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge.
