What are the deadlines for filing SSDI appeals in Missouri?

If your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) claim is denied in Missouri, it’s important to act quickly. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has strict deadlines for every stage of the appeals process, and missing even one can result in having to start over from the beginning.

Understanding these deadlines can help you preserve your rights and improve your chances of receiving the benefits you deserve.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Key SSDI Appeal Deadlines in Missouri

1. Request for Reconsideration

  • Deadline: 60 days from the date on your denial letter
  • This is the first step after an initial denial.
  • Submit Form SSA-561 to request a reconsideration.

2. Request for Hearing by an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ)

  • Deadline: 60 days from the date of your reconsideration denial
  • This is your opportunity to present your case in person (or virtually) to a judge.

3. Appeals Council Review

  • Deadline: 60 days from the date of the ALJ’s decision
  • If the judge rules against you, you can request a review by the SSA’s Appeals Council.

4. Federal Court Review

  • Deadline: 60 days from the Appeals Council’s decision or denial of review
  • This is the final step in the appeals process and takes place in a federal district court.

How Are Deadlines Counted?
  • The 60-day countdown begins from the date on the SSA decision letter, not the day you receive it.
  • SSA assumes you receive the letter 5 days after the date on the notice, unless you can prove otherwise.

What If You Miss a Deadline?

If you miss an appeal deadline, you may be required to start your application over—unless you can prove good cause for the delay. Examples of good cause include:

  • Serious illness
  • Miscommunication due to language barriers
  • Not receiving the notice on time

To claim good cause, submit a written explanation along with your appeal request. The SSA will review and decide whether to accept the late filing.

Why Acting Quickly Matters

The appeals process can take months—or even years—so any delay can significantly extend the time it takes to receive benefits. Filing promptly keeps your case moving forward and prevents unnecessary setbacks.
